In the past, we’ve talked about the basics of a C-stand and all its components and attachments. (Check out “Get a Grip on Lighting With a C-Stand” for a refresher.) There is also a great semi-advanced tutorial from DP Shane Hurlbut that covers attachments and some professional techniques. The article itself discusses the C-stand parts — base, risers, grip heads, and extension arms. First, lets take a look at Shutterstock Tutorials’ recent explanation into what C-stands are, and how you can use them.

It also has a few suggestions on dependable C-stand manufacturers like the following:

For another quick refresher, this Slanted Lens tutorial will show you the proper way to set up and break down a C-stand. The tutorial offers some helpful tips, like half turns to easily adjust your stand, adjusting from the top down so you don’t have to get a ladder to make adjustments, and using C-stands with adjustable rocky mountain legs.

In this video from Cinecom.net, you’ll learn five ways you can use a C-stand. Again, you’ll hear about the basics of proper setup, making sure your grip arms are positioned correctly, using sandbags, and using attachments. These are all crucial steps to make sure you are properly and safely using C-stands on set.

The tutorial also goes into the following five examples of using a C-stand in your next video:

  1. Overhead lighting
  2. Blocking light with flags
  3. Positioning reflectors
  4. Green screen and backdrop frame
  5. Boom pole audio recording
