Students turn to Career Closet to upgrade their wardrobe

The Ohio State University Office of Student Life hosted a Career Closet event this week for students who need the right attire to dress professionally.

Students who may not have the budget to purchase an outfit for an upcoming interview or career job fair were aided by the event at the Ohio Union.

“There is this great need for students to be able to get affordable clothing. The thing about our students is they’re extremely talented,” said Lane Washington, assistant director of strategic partnerships and outreach for Student Life. “They’re very prepared for the job market but sometimes clothing can be a burden. And so we want to make sure that we’re providing a very affordable experience for all of our students who need help.”

From clothing to shoes to accessories, hundreds of combinations were available for free. Students use a point system to select a limited number of items.

“Students can come here and get gently used professional clothing from alumni, staff and faculty and go into the job market,” Washington said.

“Things that legitimately are sitting in people’s closets could make a world of a difference for a student,” said Laith Khalaf, a Career Closet volunteer. “It’s that simple.”

The event is supported by donations collected across campus earlier in the year. Donations are accepted throughout the year.

“Obviously in Student Life it’s all about creating that extraordinary student experience,” Washington said. “So the opportunity to be able to create that for them and give them an opportunity to be in that space – that’s why we’re here. And that’s why we love this event.”
