HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man who is believed to have been walking on Maui Veteran’s Highway was struck and killed by a motorist early Saturday morning.

Police say the accident, which involved an unidentified 22-year-old man, happened at around 1:19 a.m.

The man was reportedly walking in the outermost northbound lane of the highway near mile-marker 6 when he was hit by a woman driving a red Jeep Cherokee that was traveling north in the same lane.

The driver of the Jeep, identified by police as a 33-year-old female, was not injured in the crash.

Police have not yet disclosed the details of the ensuing police investigation, and have not said why the man may have been walking in a traffic lane on a major thoroughfare.

The possible involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol, police officials say, are still under investigation.
