Magic does happen when you mix science, fantasy and Oprah Winfrey into a film. A Wrinkle in Time is an upcoming movie which follows a young girl, Meg (Storm Reid), who has to cross the dimensions of time and different realms to save her scientist dad. She is guided by three female spirits (played by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling) in her other-worldly journey.
The official premiere took place in Los Angeles on February 27th with stars such as Beyoncé reminding us what red-carpet glamour is all about. Here are a few things to know about the movie ahead of its Kenyan premiere on March 9th.
It is based on a book: The book, written in 1962, has sold over 10million copies and it was addressed to Mr. Disney himself back in 1963. It is one of the most frequently banned books in the United States but that hasn't stopped it from being a successful publication. Do you prefer reading the books over the movies? You should consider getting a copy.
It has taken 54 years to materialise: Yes, since 1963, the book has had its challenges in being turned into a movie. From financing to legal issues, the making of this movie has been a long time in coming. Wow, do you know that is how old Kenya is considering when we got independence?
Over 70 girls auditioned for the role of Meg: Storm Reid is our star of the movie. Guess what got her the chance to appear in the movie? Her poise. Don't ask me how unique that is but the smallest of details matter. Storm has appeared in movies such as 12 Years a Slave and she will be playing Meg, the girl who will do anything to save her father.
The director has already broken records: Ava DuVernay, who is the director of the movie, has broken a record. She is the first black female director to helm a Disney project worth over the $100million. That's a huge win for her. She is also a two-time Oscar nominee for Selma (2014) and 13th (2016), which means she is as awesome as they come.
