TRK Gene Fusion-positive Patient & Caregiver Experience Survey

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network, in participation with six partner Canadian patient groups have developed a new patient & caregiver survey.

The purpose of the survey is to provide the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN) with insights and perspectives from patients and caregivers who are managing TRK gene fusion–positive cancers. This is in order to complete a patient evidence submission for a new targeted medication for TRK gene fusion–positive cancers called Larotrectinib.

If you are a patient or caregiver dealing with one of the following cancers, or another cancer affected by the TRK Fusion Gene, you may be eligible for the survey.

  • colorectal cancer
  • lung cancer
  • thyroid cancer
  • sarcoma
  • infantile fibrosarcoma
  • congenital nephroma
If you aren't sure or have questions about this survey, please don't hesitate to email us at info@survivornet.ca.

Website Spotlight: Medical Cannabis

Medical cannabis is quickly becoming one of the more popular complementary therapies for all types of cancer patients. The substance was legalized for recreational use in Canada on October 17th, 2018 and patients are able to access a certain amount of cannabis for various medical reasons.

Medical cannabis shouldn’t be seen as a cure for any disease. Instead, it is a medicine used to relieve the symptoms caused by a variety of different diseases and conditions. Sometimes conventional medications simply are not enough, and in those instances cannabis may have a role to play.

How Timely is Canada’s Medication Review and Approval Process?

Thursday January 24th 2019
1:00pm - 2:00pm ET

This webinar will be hosted by Gerry Jeffcott from 3Sixty Public Affairs. He will be joined by two pharmaceutical policy researchers who have conducted analyses of Canada’s access performance over time and in comparison with other countries.

The session will begin with an overview of each of the elements of the Canadian review and approval process by our moderator. After that, the session will explore each agency’s performances in terms of supporting efficient access to needed new medicines. We will also compare Canada with other similar countries to determine how we fare internationally in terms of gaining access.

The presentation will be followed by an interactive question and answer session.

In particular, the presentation will cover the following topics:

•    A segment-by segment review of the Canadian medication review and approval   process
•    A review of overall Canada’s access record and a deeper dive into the contributions made by each player in the process
•    International comparisons to help you appreciate how Canada fares in terms of ensuring patient access to new innovations

HHS discloses issue with a specific type of radiation therapy at the Juravinski Cancer Centre

In late November 2018, Hamilton Health Sciences discovered an issue with the equipment used to deliver brachytherapy (BT) to patients with cervical cancer.

The only patients who may have been affected by this issue are those who received this specific kind of therapy – BT – for cervical cancer in 2017 and 2018.
