Audible donates downloads of “Americanah” to Newark Mayor’s Book Club

The cover art for Americanah that features the word Americanah in blue and red lettering on what appears to be a cardboard background. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's name is placed right underneath the title in light grey lettering.

Audible is proud to support Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s Book Club by providing 2,100 free downloads of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah to 12th grade public high school students and school faculty.

The Mayor’s Book Club launched in May 2019 as part of a comprehensive Newark literacy initiative, #NewarkReads, led by the City of Newark and United Way of Essex and West Hudson, with support from Audible, Panasonic Foundation, Newark Public Library, Newark City of Learning Collaborative and Victoria Foundation. The book club began with a focus on 6th to 8th graders who chose I Am Malala or The Crossover as a summer read. This fall the club expanded to include 12th graders, who will read and listen to Americanah and enhance their experience using a related resource curriculum created by the Newark Board of Education.

Mayor Baraka hosted a fireside chat with high school students about Americanah on December 19th in the Centennial Hall of Newark Public Library. Audible Community Engagement Coordinator Monique Jones joined Baraka for the fireside chat to demonstrate Audible’s Newark pride and share our commitment to Newark’s youth and our support of education-based initiatives.
