That squawking you're hearing about a new Howard the Duck movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is premature.

The cigar-smoking alien duck has already made a few cameos in the Guardians of the Galaxy films thanks to director James Gunn, who is a self-professed super-fan of the character.

Lately, Gunn has been chatting about his love of the character on Twitter — leading some to speculate that he's been working on a solo movie for Howard.

However, Gunn set the record straight on Wednesday (June 28): "There is NO Howard the Duck movie at the present time. There are a lot of comic characters I love but I'm not making films of them all."

Just because there's no solo movie for Howard the Duck at the moment doesn't mean we've seen the last of him. Back in April, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige hinted at the future of the character.

"The fun thing about Howard is he shows up where you least expect him," Feige explained, then teased: "So, who knows where he's going to appear next?"

Of course, George Lucas produced a Howard the Duck film back in the '80s that still ranks as one of the most notorious box office bombs of all time.

In fact, not even James Gunn was a fan of Lucas's film version, calling it "the biggest cinematic disappointment" of his life.

Thirty years on, the character of Howard the Duck has maintained a big cult following — perhaps he deserves an official spot in the Guardians or the Avengers if a solo movie isn't in the offing?
