nother year has passed, and Pride month is upon us once again. June is always an incredibly exciting month, as LGBTQ2S+ people around the world celebrate inclusion and increased visibility, and continue to fight for those within our community who still face homophobia, transphobia, racism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination. The year since our last festival has been filled with many wins and losses in the LGBTQ2S+ community. We are so proud to see that the wins have made us safer and freer, and that the losses are never the end, but only cause us to fight harder for what we deserve. June may be Pride month but that does not mean it is the only month of activity for LGBTQ2S+ organizations. Many groups work tirelessly, year round, to increase equality, equity, acceptance, and inclusion of LGBTQ2S+ people in our city and around the world. As we embark on our 38th Annual Pride Festival and Parade, we would like to acknowledge how

6

integral every single person in the LGBTQ2S+ community in the greater Edmonton area is, 365 days a year. The Edmonton Pride Festival Society feels honoured to provide LGBTQ2S+ people in our city an opportunity to shine the light of their various truths, experiences, and realities through the prism of the Pride Festival, showing the world the FULL SPECTRUM of our amazing community. We hope this Pride Guide will provide you a glimpse into the magic and excitement that happens over our ten day festival. The diversity and passion in our city is what makes the Edmonton Pride Festival so fantastic. So take in as much as you can, make use of all the opportunities to learn more about your community, and continue to advocate for and support the many LGBTQ2S+ groups in Edmonton and its surrounding area throughout the year! Yours In Pride, The Edmonton Pride Festival Board of Directors

s the Capital Region gets ready to celebrate this year’s Pride Festival, the Edmonton Pride Festival Society is already looking forward to 2019’s festival plans. We are very excited to let you in on some news about our growth and expansion. Over the past few years the Edmonton Pride Festival has steadily continued to grow in size, calibre, and number of attendees. Four years ago we moved from Sir Winston Churchill Square to End of Steel Park to have more room for our parade and festival. After this year, we will be moving again, though not too far. For 2019 the Pride Festival will be moving across Gateway Blvd to the area known for the Fringe, around the Arts Barns. While the parade will keep its current route, we are very excited to be moving our bev-

20

erage gardens and festivities closer to the parade’s end. Our plans are still growing and we won’t know exactly how things will look for a few more months, but our hope is that in working with the ATB Financial Arts Barn and local area around McIntyre Park and Whyte Ave we will be able to provide more space in a centralized location for groups and organizations to plan events. We are so very thankful for the support and efforts the residents and businesses of Old Strathcona have given to us these past years and we hope this growth of our festival will continue to make this amazing part of our city proud to host us. The Edmonton Pride Festival Society hopes that you all enjoy this year’s festival and we can’t wait to share a bigger, better festival with you in 2019!

JULY 20-29

I

n 2017, Northlands approached the Edmonton Pride Festival Society about exploring a joint initiative to support Edmonton and northern Alberta’s LGBTQ2S+ communities. Through meetings and discussions, the idea came about to hold the first annual Pride Day at K-Days. In addition to Pride Day at K-Days, Northlands purchased 5,000 pairs of rainbow socks to be sold for $10 a pair. Purchasing a pair of socks and wearing them to Northlands on Pride Day would gain you admission to K-Days 2017. The Edmonton Pride Festival was responsible for the sale of the socks and all revenue would go back to EPFS to establish a fund to provide support to LGBTQ2S+ communities in rural Alberta. In preparation for Pride Days, the EPFS sold socks all over Edmonton as well as online, and participated in the annual KDays parade. The Pride Centre of Edmonton, with their volunteers, made hundreds

of pronoun buttons to be handed out on Pride Day. They also provided a community educator to present sensitivity training to all 1,500 of the Northlands staff before Pride Day. The Pride Day and Pride Socks initiatives were both a success!!! $15,000 was raised and presented to the Edmonton Pride Festival at the close of Pride Day at K-Days on July 28, 2017. $5,000 was put into a community grant for organizations of groups supporting LGBTQ2S+ youth in rural Alberta, $5,000 to support the Status of Queer Conference, and $5,000 will be used for future rural youth initiatives. Northlands and the Edmonton Pride Festival Society are happy to announce that this year’s Pride Day at K-Days will occur on July 26, 2018. Pride Socks will be available for purchase this weekend at the festival and on our website at edmontonpride.ca.

uesday November 28th, 2017 will likely be remembered not as a happy day but a solemn one. Our government stood up to apologize for past discrimination and persecution of LGBTQ2S+ Canadian citizens. The Prime Minister called it “a turning point” and we hope it proves to be just that. The apology was heartfelt and sincere. It spoke to the horrible treatment of lesbian and gay government employees and Canadian Forces members, the suppression of the two spirit community, and the failure to support LGBTQ2S+ people of colour and the many intersectional segments of our community. It was a reckoning of what has been done to this generation’s forebears and a promise to do better. We are glad that this apology may bring those in our community who have suffered in the past some form of peace and justice. Rob Oliphant, MP for Don Valley West in Toronto and a longtime advocate of the LGBTQ2S+ community, said after the speech that “it’s very important that we start here, but that we don’t stop here”. An apology such as this without actions would be pointless, and thankfully the government is backing up their words with important actions. Those who suffered directly from the government’s past cruelty and their families will be able to seek justice in having their inhuman criminal charges not just pardoned, but expunged. Veterans who were

24

wrongfully discharged with dishonour will have benefits, which were denied to them for so long, reinstated. There will be educational resources, memorials, and curriculum created to honour our past struggles and teach future Canadians of what we have fought for. Randy Boissonnault, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on LGBTQ2S+ affairs and MP for Edmonton Centre, was quoted as saying, “It allows us to acknowledge… that discrimination continues and that we can do better”. Many things were righted today, but as a community we must remember that trans people are still marginalized and are more susceptible to violence and discrimination, people of colour still suffer racism and poverty, men who sleep with men are still unable to donate blood, and our youth still make up a disproportionate percentage of those who are homeless. As the Prime Minister thanked the trailblazers who got us to the point of our government acknowledging and apologizing for past wrongs done to our community, we stand by the trailblazers of today, hopeful that change will continue, and we empower them to fight to ensure it happens. T

wenty years ago something changed that forever altered the way lesbian, gay, and bisexual people see themselves in the world. Due to what happened, the young adults and teenagers of today who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual got to grow up knowing that they would be fairly treated, if not in practice at least in principle, under the law. Twenty years ago, Delwin Vriend won his case, at the Supreme Court level, against his employer for terminating his employment due to his sexual orientation, and the country enshrined protection under the law based on sexual orientation. It was an historic moment; it changed the way we as a community live, it gave us hope... or at least it gave it to some of us. The Vriend case was a first step, a stand against bigotry, but it only addressed the ‘LGB’ of LGBTIQ2S+. After enshrining sexual orientation into human rights law, it took 19 years to include gender identity. Why is that? The ‘TIQ’ are right next to the ‘LGB’ in the acronym. Shouldn’t the importance of our rights be as close to each other as those letters? Somehow, we thought it was okay as sexually divergent people to ignore the plight of gender divergent people as we gained our rights. We won one fight for ourselves and just kept going; onto gay marriage, gay adoption, and gay

divorce, while those who first raised the battle cry of our movement were left with no rights. Basically abandoned by the ‘LGB’, the ‘TIQ’ fought for and started to win their own rights. The right to be seen, to express their true selves, to be protected under the law. They should not have had to win those fights alone. We all should have been fighting together. The Vriend win should have been for all LGBTIQ people. Reflecting on the 20 years since the Vriend case was won, and what happened and didn’t happen in those intervening years, something becomes clear. We need to broaden our focus. There’s still so many parts of the acronym that aren’t where the rest of us are at. The ‘2S’ and the ‘+’; black, Indigenous, people of colour, and all the emerging sexual and gender identities must be acknowledged, celebrated, and stood next to. Until every facet of light in the spectrum that is our queer community can feel safe, valued, and free, those of us who have gained that privilege must stand beside and behind each other and remember that once the party is over, the fight begins again. -Anonymous

I

s there anyone in the LGBTQ2S+ community who doesn’t know the name Michael Phair? You may not know the man personally, but if you’ve been to any of the past Pride parades, or interacted with any LGBTQ2S+ focussed organization in the city, you’ve at least heard of him. In case you haven’t, you should know that he was the first openly gay elected politician in Alberta, he fought for us from the early days of the gay rights movement as a city councillor, he helped build many LGBTQ2S+ support networks and organizations, but most of all he is a pioneer, a hero, a role model, and one of the kindest people you will ever meet.

In 2015, the Edmonton Public School Board decided to name a school after Michael. It is one, if not the only, public school’s in the country named after an openly LGBTQ2S+ person. This past fall that school opened, welcoming students from grades 7-9. As he does with everything, Michael accepted the honour with pride, humility, heart, and flair! It is poignant to note that the school named after one of this city’s LGBTQ2S+ heroes would house students in middle school. For many of us, grades 7-9 were the hardest. It was a time in our lives that we were first discovering who we were and how we felt about things like love, sex, and friendship. It was also a time that others started seeing who we were or might be and they could be very cruel in their response to our identities. To know that there is a school in our city, where the name above the door and the philosophy practiced within its walls represent openness, understanding, and care, gives us hope. The students of the Michael Phair School will have a role model in their school’s namesake that can teach them to accept instead of hate those who are different and it will build a stronger and more egalitarian generation of young people. It is a sure thing that the students and faculty of the Michael Phair School have a long list of positive qualities to practice so that they may reflect the person whose name is on their school. It is a surer thing still, that those students and faculty need only try and it will make Michael proud.

CBS has defended the policy, stating that it is necessary to ensure the safety of the blood supply, often citing concerns from patient and recipient groups as major reasons for continuing the ban. On the other hand, LGBTQ2S+ individuals, the organizations that serve them, and allies within the scientific community have long countered that the policy is discriminatory. They argue the policy ignores modern understandings of HIV and technological advancements in testing, treatment and prevention. Well, it looks like there is finally an opportunity for change! The Edmonton Men’s Health Collective (EMHC), in partnership with the Community-Based Research Centre for Gay Men’s Health (CBRC) are bringing the Sex Now Survey to Edmonton Pride in hopes of gathering the evidence we need to finally end this discriminatory ban. The Sex Now Survey is a periodic survey that asks gay, bi, trans, and queer men about their daily lives, including their sex lives, to produce meaningful data that is used to improve health outcomes through informing policy development, and program and service delivery. This year, the survey is returning to its roots, with researchers visiting Prides across the country to collect the in-person data needed to prove

to Canadian Blood Services, and their regulator Health Canada, that gay, bi, and other men who have sex with men can safely donate blood, and that a policy that stigmatizes our community can finally be taken off the books. The in-person survey is open to all folks who identify as men who have been sexually active with another man in the past 12 months. Researchers will also ask for a small amount of blood obtained via optional finger prick from participants who are 18 years of age or older. We also encourage HIV-positive men to participate, as the research team hopes to better understand some of the specific issues facing the “Poz” community. If the research team is successful, we hope to present evidence to Canadian Blood Services and Health Canada as early as 2019. A core principle of community-based research is, “Nothing about us without us!” Both the EMHC and CBRC are fully committed to this philosophy. Decisions about our community shouldn’t be made without input from our community. So, make sure you come visit one of our booths this Pride. By answering a few questions and giving just a drop of blood, you can do your part to help end the blood ban once and for all!

How Did We Get Where We Are Today? Edmonton Queer History App Developed by Researchers at the University of Alberta Now Available

T

he Edmonton Queer History App combines historical pictures and video with interviews focusing on key Edmonton locations to tell the story of how queer rights have changed in the city from the past to the present day. Interviews from leaders in the LGBTQ2S+ community and archival research have been combined to create a narrative of past struggles and successes to educate those both within and outside of the LGBTQ2S+community. The locations on this tour have been selected because they hold particular relevance to the development of contemporary LGBTQ2S+ social and legislative rights in Edmonton. This new multimedia educational tool directly addresses an important curricular gap in Canadian history education using emerging technology that promotes learning both in and beyond the classroom with desktop and mobile devices.

Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) awarded to Dr. Harley (PI) and Drs.
