For the second year in a row, the Installation Design Showcase at Coverings 2018 featured creative tile applications inside of tiny homes.
The ninth annual installation project paired three design firms, three tile sponsors, and three level five installers from the National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) to collaborate on three different tiny home designs. The homes included a luxury cottage designed by Brittney Ferren of The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry, a contemporary home by Rita Carson Guest, FASID of Carson Guest, and an open, modern space by Jeffrey Baker of Jeffrey Bruce Baker Designs.
We caught up with Baker to ask him how he chose the products for his home. His team focused on getting great design on a budget while creating the feeling of a large space inside the 330 square-foot home. The ceilings are the heighest allowable height to travel on the highway, and the main bedroom has full standing room.
"Storage was focus, larger spaces were a focus, and just the idea of volume," said Baker of his design process.
Baker looked to Estima Ceramica for large format solutions that would create a spacious look, as well as some fun details like a 3D geometric tile and a tile with a tattoo-like printed design.
NTCA member Woody Sanders, of DW Sanders Tile & Stone Contracting Inc., worked on the tile installation for the home, using Laticrete underlayments and including heated floors throughout.
For a lot of the home's fixtures and accessories, Baker turned to Ikea.
"It doesn't have to be expensive to be really good design," Baker says. "I think the tiny home market is a DIY market to a good extent, and it's one where you're looking for a really economical way to have a cool place that can be in one of these new communities."
