4 Trends Shaping Hybrid Cloud Adoption

Hybrid cloud adoption is accelerating.

A report from McKinsey found that 77% of companies relied on traditional IT infrastructure in 2015. That number will shrink to 43% by next year as organisations migrate to the cloud. In fact, by next year, at least half of IT spending will be in the cloud. By 2020, cloud spending will account for 60% of all IT infrastructure and 60-70% of all software, services, and technology.

As more organisations turn to the cloud, we’re beginning to see some trends emerge. We see patterns in how organisations choose to build their hybrid clouds and how they use them.

1) As-a-Service World

Deloitte Global predicts that by the end of next year, spending on IT-as-a-Service will be $547 billion worldwide. At this pace, we will see that as-a-service solutions represent more than half of all IT spending by 2022. This fundamental shift from building IT services to consuming IT services will change the cloud. It’s an anything as a service (XaaS) mindset.

Cloud as a service solutions fall into three main categories: Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). SaaS offers software applications on demand subscription models. PaaS offers application development platforms for developers on subscription models. IaaS provides highly scalable infrastructure. This eliminates the cost of building and maintaining hardware in house.

More and more companies are turning to XaaS solutions to stay competitive.

2) Better-than-ever third-party provider support.

When an organisation trusts a provider to keep its data safe, a good relationship matters. As hybrid cloud adoption rises, organisations will demand better services and support from providers. As they should.

As we’ve seen, the future for the cloud is not with one vendor. Organisations will be juggling relationships with many vendors to meet all their needs. Each vendor will fill a specific purpose, but each vendor will also need to meet high standards for customer support.

Price will not be the only determining factor. The choice will come down to SLAs, customer support, reputation, and more. At Macquarie Cloud Services, we pride ourselves on having an industry-leading NPS score of +87. Customer support isn’t innate – it’s a skill that must be perfected.

3) Seamless cloud migrations.

Migrations to the cloud are make it or break it. Cloud migration can be an exciting time for an organisation. If done successfully, organisations will see reduced costs, improved productivity, faster time to market, and tighter IT goals. But, when a cloud migration goes wrong – it goes really wrong. Organisations want flexibility. That’s why they’re moving to the cloud. Third-party providers will need to make the ability to migrate to their cloud as easy as possible.

4) Disaster recovery in the cloud.

On a related note, disaster recovery in the cloud is another trend we see gaining momentum. In the days of yore, disaster recovery was expensive, time-consuming, and clunky. It required a lot of moving parts, failure points, and expense. But with the cloud, that can all be a thing of the past. Disaster recovery in the cloud can be a smooth experience. Data is uploaded to the cloud minute by minute to keep an up-to-date copy of your data.

This can also help create a seamless cloud migration. A cloud provider like Macquarie Cloud Services can set up a disaster recovery program. It works in the background saving data as work continues uninterrupted. Then when that data’s saved? You can ‘failover’ to the cloud. The difference is, you won’t transition back to your legacy system, but stay in the cloud. It’s a headache free way of ensuring all your data comes with you.
