Travel to Mauritius – Episode 634

Hear about travel to Mauritius as the Amateur Traveler talks to Corinne Vail from ReflectionsEnroute.com about her visit to this warm island paradise.

Corinne says, “Mauritius is a beach, go to the resort, lay on the beach, take the catamaran, and have a picnic kind of place… and that drew us to it except that that is not really our modus operandi. We are more of the cultural, go find the tour, World Heritage sites, hiking kind of people. But you know what? When you are in the middle of a German winter and it’s cold and dark then you are thinking the beach doesn’t sound so bad. What was great about Mauritius is that you don’t have to do the beach the whole time. We did our fair share. We did the catamaran tour. We played with crabs on the beach. But we also got to do other things.”

Corinne says the best of Mauritius’ beaches are on the west side of the island. The prevailing winds come from the east and southeast. She particularly recommends Flic-en-Flac beach whose unusual name comes from a Dutch phrase meaning free, flat land. She also enjoyed watching the kite surfers at the northern end of the island near Cap Malheaueux. They rented a car and she says finding the best beaches in Mauritius is as easy as looking for where the other cars are parked.

The two UNESCO sites on the island relate to the colonial history, slavery, and indentured servitude. One is the Mauritius version of Ellis Island, Aapravasi Ghat, and the other, Le Morne Cultural Landscape, the jagged mountain used as a shelter by runaway slaves.

Corrine stayed halfway between the resort area of Grand-Baie with its great restaurants and the capital of Port Louis with some of the best of Mauritius’ tourist attractions. She recommends the central market in Port Louis in addition to Aapravasi Ghat. She also recommends a visit to a rum distillery since the island is known for its sugar production.

Other places to visit in Mauritius that Corrine recommends would include the Seven Coloured Earths or “multi-colored sands”. This is a great thing to do on a rainy day when the colors will be more bold. They also enjoyed the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden.
