The Future of Healthcare PR - Garret's Story

Posted in Freelancer, Top tips, Tools & Advice, Learning, Freelancer's stories, Interview,

All eyes are on the world of healthcare PR and it's no surprise given the developments that have taken place over recent years: from incorporating blockchain technology into patient health records to Amazon breaking into the market.

It has never been more important to have a strong communications team who can rise to the challenges and opportunities presented.

Every month, we talk to a professional within our network of over 2000 freelancers to understand the diversity of experience within The Work Crowd. And in light of exciting developments within the healthcare industry, who better to catch up with, than Garrett, Healthcare & Health Tech Communications Consultant with seven years of experience working with some of the most innovative healthcare and health tech companies, including Santen, South London Young Parkinson’s Network and Allison+Partners.

To start, tell us about your experience and what makes you unique, Garrett.

As a freelance communications consultant in health and health technology, I've had the opportunity to work with all sorts of clients multi-nationals, start-ups, agencies and charities. Although healthcare is often regarded as somewhat behind the curve in innovation, the industry is catching up, and fast! My passion lies in applying appropriate insights and practices from other sectors to craft campaigns that can positively impact the lives of people around the world.

You have worked with Precipice through the platform, a company designing products from transport to pharmaceuticals, industrial equipment to domestic appliances. What business objective were you working with them to achieve?

The team at Precipice, a strategic design consultancy, are incredibly talented and so dedicated to what they do. The aim of the project was to have them recognised for their achievements by increasing their profile amongst prospective clients. At its core, it was a fantastic opportunity to lay the foundations of their messaging framework, content and channel strategies.

What has your biggest career achievement been to date?

One of the most rewarding projects I've been involved in recently, is an EMEA-wide CSR campaign for a specialist ophthalmology company. The initiative is inspiring employees in their day-to-day roles by giving them the opportunity to donate their time and volunteer with local NGOs. It's great to work on something that not only communicates, but demonstrates corporate values.

As a healthcare comms professional, how has the industry changed, and what insights do you have for the future of healthcare and the healthcare tech industry?

With the rise in mobile and proliferation of patient, physician and public health data, it's never been a more exciting time to work. From managing adherence with trackers, to optimising physician-patient consultations with online tools, and coordinating personalised management strategies based on complex data patterns. As digital continues to permeate and innovate, communications opportunities and touch-points will become ever-more targeted and sophisticated.

“The Work Crowd is a fantastic platform that provides a future-focused service, reflecting changing perspectives to work. It's great to be able to review, apply and collaborate with a range of interesting clients, all within one platform. The team at The Work Crowd are great too and always happy to help!” - Garrett K.
