CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - It can be difficult to kill time waiting for a flight, especially for those who arrive early to make sure they get through security screening.

Charleston International Airport is trying to make that lull a little more bearable with three new businesses opening Monday.

Daddy's Girls Bakery, Liz Me Mel Dolls & Gifts, as well as King Street Cookies opened Monday after a ribbon cutting.  A fourth kiosk specializing in Cuban food will open in Mid-May. LMM Dolls and Daddy's Girls Bakery are on Concourse A while King Street Cookies is in Concourse B.

The businesses are part of the specialty leasing program designed to create opportunities for small businesses at the airport. LMM Dolls is run by a husband and wife team who got their start at the Charleston City Market.

"We started in the historic Charleston City Market as a temporary vendor," the team said in a statement. "Some days we had the opportunity to work and other days we wished we could have worked. We needed a second income coming into the home but still needed the flexibility to drive our young family to various events at varying times."

King Street Cookies is the only local bakery certified as Orthodox Kosher in the area. The owner, Harris Cohen, opened the business four years ago. It has more than 40 varieties of cookies.

"After working on Wall Street in New York City for many years, there was the desire to start and build an operating business," Cohen said. "We want to give travelers a high-quality food option as they arrive in Charleston or as they depart – a first or last "taste of Charleston."

The Charleston Chewie highlights Daddy's Girls Bakery. They sell it along with a cake pops and other sweet treats. Nathaniel and Chastity Brown stared the business together after meeting in 2009. They've also done catering and appeared at the Charleston City Market.

"Our Charleston Chewies will appeal to travelers because they are a local staple that they cannot get anywhere else," Nathaniel Brown said. "We wanted to open the kiosk at the airport because we saw it as an awesome opportunity to not only get our business more recognizable locally but internationally as well."

The kiosk program sells itself on the traveling public having a larger disposable income and the nearly 4 million passengers which came through the airport in 2017.
