Body camera footage of Douglas County deadly shooting released
Dramatic body camera footage showcases the moment two deputies pulled a truck over and a Colorado Springs man inside pulled a gun out before deputies shot and killed him.
The body camera footage can be viewed at the bottom of this article.
The traffic stop happened on Aug. 31 at about 4:41 p.m. along Highway 85 just north of Delva Drive. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says deputies pulled the truck over after it made an unsafe turn right in front of them. Four people were in the truck.
But after pulling the vehicle over, the sheriff's office says it learned one of the male passengers had a restraining order out against the woman who was driving. That passenger was allegedly belligerent with deputies, refusing to answer when asked his legal name. The situation escalated further when deputies asked him to get out of the vehicle; when he finally did so, the sheriff's office says he had a pistol aimed at the deputies.
The body camera footage appears to show deputies yelling at the suspect to not move, then firing at him when he continued advancing forward with his weapon drawn.
The suspect was later identified by the Douglas County Coroner’s Office as 61-year-old Paul Askins. Askins' listed address is in Colorado Springs.
At the time of the shooting, Askins had two active warrants out of El Paso County, Colorado, one for second-degree burglary of a building and the other for failure to appear.
The names of the deputies involved will not be released at this time.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
