Kendall Square public art hopes to send colorful message this fall

Artist Liz LaManche says her Kendall Center piece is about standing athwart tribalism

Liz LaManche, the artist behind such Boston-area creations as the Stairs of Fabulousness at Boston City Hall and the “World’s Biggest Tattoo” in Eastie—is back with another creation.

This time it’s just outside of the Marriott in Kendall Center in Cambridge’s busy, busy Kendall Square. In fact, the view from the hotel down to LaManche’s work is said to be pretty spectacular.

Charitable organization Oxfam America is sponsoring the work, which LaManche says she did in conjunction with the group’s latest social justice campaign for raising funds and awareness.

What is the work, exactly? It’s a series of colorful and connected shapes called “100% Human.” From a website about the piece:

The message: “We’re all in this together: Our differences are less than we think and our connections are more than we think.” It’s my personal belief that to save the world and our species, we need to put aside tribalism and greed, and work together on a species-wide level, learning to accept and love one another as family.

LaManche says “100% Human” will be up for about another two months—so through the first week of December perhaps—or until winter weather makes it untenable. Kendall Center landlord Boston Properties will make the call.
