Art in Savannah

Updated Sept 25, 2017   Fall is such a wonderful time to visit Savannah. The summer heat has started to die down, the humidity lessens a bit and the morning fog seen over the rivers and marshes makes the city feel so romantic and cozy. It is the perfect time to come in off the water, walk around the beautiful squares and parks in the Historic District and truly take in all the beauty the city has to offer. With Savannah College of Art and Design back in session, the city is teeming with amazing art exhibits, gallery openings and events. Over here at Savannah Dream Vacations, we have put together a list of our favorite art establishments and a few upcoming exhibitions. While you walk around our beautiful downtown enjoying the fall air be sure to stop into these galleries and museums for all of the greatest art Savannah has to offer!

The Historic Telfair Museum and Academy

Fall in Savannah | Things to Do | Savannah Dream Vacations You can’t talk about art in Savannah without talking about the Historic Telfair Museum and Academy. One of Savannah’s oldest establishments, it was transformed from a family mansion into an art museum in 1886 making it the south’s oldest public art museum. Recently renovated, the architecture alone is worth the visit, but inside you can find two rooms filled with 19th and 20th century American and European art works from the family’s private collection. Get lost in the Museum’s incredible19th century period rooms while marveling at the massive collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings and decorative arts. You’ll feel like you were transported to a Savannah of year’s past. The Telfair Museum is located at 121 Barnard St, Savannah, GA 31401.

The Jepson Center

Fall in Savannah | Things to Do | Savannah Dream Vacations If modern works are more your speed then you must check out the Telfair’s newest museum, The Jepson Center. Just across the square from the Telfair Museum and Academy, this sleek modern museum features over 7,500 square feet of gallery space. With rotating exhibits from the museum’s permanent collection and frequently shifting special exhibitions, there is always something new to see. Become familiarized with some of Savannah’s finest contemporary artists and see works by some of the biggest names in contemporary art. Be sure not to miss the Jepson’s exhibit “Rodin: The Human Experience” featuring a selection of works by Auguste Rodin.

The SCAD Museum

Established to enrich the education of Savannah College of Art and Design students, The SCAD Museum features the work of both established contemporary artists and emerging SCAD students. With new exhibitions each academic quarter the works shift and vary greatly depending on the exhibition, making it a great educational spot for anyone curious about any and all areas of contemporary art. If you’re traveling with little ones be sure to stop by The SCAD Museum’s Family Day! In Celebration of their 5th anniversary the museum is opening their doors for a free day of fun, education and workshops suited for the whole family. The celebration will take place on Saturday, October 15th from 1-4 pm The SCAD Museum is located at 601 Turner Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401

Featuring work made by SCAD students, alumni and faculty, it’s one of the best places to pick up one of a kind Savannah souvenirs.
