NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - A new phone application by the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) called Lowcountry Go aims to decrease the amount of cars on the road and therefore the congestion around the Lowcountry.

Users can put in their starting location and their work address and the app will find alternate options for you. Those include carpools you can be a part of or bus services in the area.

The app was presented on Monday morning to BCDCOG members.

Mobility manager at the BCDCOG, Vonie Gilreath, said their surveys show 90% of people in the Lowcountry are driving just themselves to work which is contributing to the traffic congestion.

"We want people to get in the habit or at least try taking a different mode of transportation," Gilreath said. "Carpool with that person who works on the other side of your office. Take CARTA that day. Just try something different and we hope it will change your behavior."

Lowcountry Go has a website but staff believe the app will increase the amount of people participating in the alternatives.

"This was the step that we needed to take," Gilreath added. "This is going to be the game-changer."

Lowcountry Go will have a "Commuter Challenge" October 15-19 where people can win prizes by logging their commutes on the app.
