- Consumer goods giant Unilever and furniture retailer Ikea Group together with the Lego Foundation are launching The Real Play Coalition aimed at raising awareness about the importance of play.
- England and the US have decided to opt out of an international standardised test designed to assess how well children can spot fake news. The new “global competences test” is to be carried out alongside maths, reading and science, as part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) tests. Scotland, Canada and Australia have agreed to take part in the new assessments.
- New results published by the DfE show standards are rising across England’s secondary schools with pupils who speak English as second language overtaking native speakers.
- The government’s former social mobility commissioners have told MPs that education alone is not enough to improve social mobility. David Johnston said the big thing that was missing in government was a cross-departmental strategy on social mobility. The four former commissioners revealed their plans to set up an institute of social mobility, to bring about practical changes.
- A Leeds Beckett University study of 775 teachers shows that 77% said that poor teacher mental health was having a detrimental effect on pupils’ progress.
- The End Child Poverty coalition published figures providing a new Child Poverty map of the UK and reveal that there are now constituencies within the UK where more than half of children are growing up in poverty.
- According to a Plan International UK survey, the vast majority of girls at secondary school want their schools to teach them how to cope with sexism and racism online.
- A set of tools for schools and teachers have been developed by UCL Institute of Education, Sheffield Hallam University and Durham University based on their research findings.
