The Southwest Cougars moved into the eighth and final playoff spot in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League with a 6-3 over the Pembina Valley Hawks on Sunday in Morden.

Jared McCorrister opened the scoring and add two more goals in the third period for the Cougars (12-12-1-0). Callum Fortin chipped in with a pair of goals, while Tanner Andrew posted a marker and a helper. Riley Wallace made 25 saves.

Wyatt Cobb, Tyson Allison and Jayden McCarthy replied for the Hawks (13-10-1-1).

In Sunday’s other game, the Yellowhead Chiefs beat the Norman Northstars 8-2. In Saturday’s games, it was: Brandon Wheat Kings 5, Interlake Lightning 2; and Chiefs 9, Northstars 2.

Chiefs 8 Northstars 2

At Shoal Lake, Colby Joseph recorded a hat trick, while Chad Nychuk and Jake Poole both had a goal and a trio of helpers for the Chiefs (14-11-0-0). Tanner Dutcawich had two goals with Owen Wareham adding the other.

Jerome Linklater and Mikey Baron scored for the Northstars (1-25-0-1)

Wheat Kings 5 Lightning 2

On Saturday at Teulon, Lynden McCallum had a goal and an assist for the league-leading Wheat Kings (23-2-0-0), with Rylan Thiessen, Nolan Ritchie, Carter Sawchuk and Tanner Morrison also lighting the lamp. Keegan Watkins-McIntyre made 24 saves.

Gabe Odowichuk scored once and set up Eric Krywy’s marker for the Lightning (5-17-1-0).

Chiefs 9 Northstars 2

At Shoal Lake, Poole, Dutcawich and Joseph all lit found the back of the net twice for the Chiefs, with Wareham, Pierce Martin and Logan Wotton adding singles. Wareham also had two helpers.
