‘British-made’ boost for fashion house

An "enhanced appetite" for British-made textiles has helped Derbyshire fashion house David Nieper post its strongest financial results in the company's history.

The business makes a range of women's clothing such as lingerie, dresses and nightwear at its factory in Alfreton and has been trading for more than five decades.

Newly filed accounts revealed the manufacturer's turnover increased to £16.8m in the year to 31 March 2017, up from £14.9m in 2016.

Pre-tax profits also climbed to £3.3m from £1.2m.

A statement signed off by the board said: "The company has benefitted from a more competitive GBP and an enhanced appetite for 'British designed and British made' following the Brexit referendum.

"Financial performance has been the strongest in the company's history. Further investment has been made to improve productivity and expand production space to meet record demand."

During the financial year, the company formed the David Nieper Education Trust to invest in the next generation of skilled workers in the textile industry.

The purpose of the trust is to develop young people for the benefit of the local economy and support Alfreton's only secondary school, currently ranked by Ofsted as inadequate.

The academy opened its doors in September 2016 with the capacity for 850 pupils.

The statement added: "The directors still consider that it is essential to hold reserves; firstly to tackle the acute skills shortage, an inevitable consequence of the loss of British textile production offshore in recent decades; secondly, to insulate against the backdrop of certain macroeconomics; and thirdly, to take advantage of opportunities to create and secure jobs locally."
