RHEUMATOID arthritis affects about 400,000 people in the UK. Apples, peaches, oats and turmeric were just a few of the best foods for managing the condition’s symptoms, according to scientists.

Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms include joint pain, joint stiffness, swelling, tiredness and weight loss.

But, scientists have revealed a list of foods that could have beneficial effects on symptoms for arthritis patients.

The best fruits for patients were dried plums, grapefruit, grapes, blueberries, apples, peaches and mango. They all reduce inflammation and protect against bone destruction.

Wheat, rice, oats, corn, barley and rye also reduced inflammation, the researchers from KIIT University, India, revealed.

Regular consumption of specific dietary fibres, vegetables, fruits and spices, as well as the elimination of components that cause inflammation and damage, can help patients to manage the effects of rheumatoid arthritis

“Regular consumption of specific dietary fibres, vegetables, fruits and spices, as well as the elimination of components that cause inflammation and damage, can help patients to manage the effects of rheumatoid arthritis,” said researcher Dr Bhawna Gupta.

“Incorporating probiotics into the diet can also reduce the progression and symptoms of this disease.

“Supporting disease management through food and diet does not pose any harmful side effects and is relatively cheap and easy.”

The best dairy food to eat is yogurt curd, as it reduces joint tenderness, swelling and inflammation.

Ginger and turmeric were both recommended because of their protective properties against complications outside of joints.

Fish oil and olive oil both reduced joint stiffness, the researchers added.

“Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis should switch from omnivorous diets, drinking alcohol and smoking to Mediterranean, vegan, elemental or elimination diets, as advised by their doctor or dietician,” said Gupta.

Dried plums could help to relieve inflammation

The scientists hoped new medicines could be developed for rheumatoid arthritis patients, that used the results of their study.

But, they recommended speaking to a GP before embarking on any diet programme.

There’s currently no cure for the condition, but early treatment and support can reduce joint damage, the NHS said.

Painkillers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs both help to ease pain in patients.
