Can you make a full-time income by selling your art work and repeat pattern designs online? The answer is a resounding yes!

As a self-employed textile designer with 11 years of experience, I have built a steady flow of income through my repeat pattern designs, which I sell on multiple websites. In this post, I will share a few tips on how to make that happen for yourself.

1. Create regularly: Many people feel like they want to create a few designs, start selling them, and they will become rich quickly. This is not the reality. To start making a full-time income from your designs, you need to be creating regularly. Your first 10 designs probably won’t be very good from a commercial standpoint, so you need to keep working on your skills, developing your drawing and design style, and creating regularly.

2. Upload your designs to multiple websites: You cannot expect to make a full-time income from just uploading a few patterns to Spoonflower or Redbubble. You need to be uploading to multiple websites. I have a separate video on this topic that I will link in the description box below, but basically, you need to have a well-rounded income from multiple sources.

1. Be self-taught or learn from others: I am a self-taught designer and I am learning constantly but you can also learn from others. The important thing is to put your images out there, see what works, see what you like, and see what your customers purchase. Then you can make decisions based on that.

2. Have a diversified income: Like in an investment portfolio, you want to diversify your income by selling your designs on different websites. If one website crashes or is sold to the wrong people, you still have all your other websites working for you.

So if you’re a complete beginner, my advice is to start learning how to draw your elements and the basic basics of design. Then start creating regularly and uploading your designs to multiple websites. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your income will start growing!
