7 Herbs You Should Be Growing In The Summers

in #gardening6 years ago

Herbs are perfect for growing containers. Most of them are easy to grow, and also look amazing. Like vegetables, herbs vary in their temperature preferences — some like it cool; others need the heat. In this post, I will discuss some of the herbs that are ideal for growing in the summers.

Ideal Herbs for the summers:

Many of the most popular herbs are native to Mediterranean climates where they thrive in the hot sun with little rainfall. If your regions get a lot of summer rain, containers may be your only option for growing herbs. With containers, you have the liberty to move them under cover and keep them from getting too wet. Plant them in very well-drained soil and fertilize sparingly. These herbs are good candidates for combining in a planter because they like the same conditions.

7 Herbs for summers:

No #1: Thyme

Varieties abound, but don’t pass up common thyme for any kind of cooking. Hardy to zone 5, thyme likes dry conditions and lot of sun. Have fun with unusual varieties like lemon thyme, mint thyme, and nutmeg thyme.

No #2: Marjoram

Aromatic, sweet marjoram is an annual that’s easy to grow from seed and tolerates light frost.

No #3: Oregano

Oregano is similar, but is a perennial and has a more pungent aroma and taste.

No #4: Sage

More cold-hardy than rosemary, sage can survive outside to zone 4. Sage is available in many varieties: tricolor, purple, golden, and dwarf — a good bet for a container.

No #5: Savory

With a strong peppery aroma, winter savory is a wonderful addition to a pot of beans. It’s hardy to zone 6. Summer savory is an annual with a more delicate aroma.

No #6: Tarragon

An ungainly plant, tarragon belongs in a pot with more orderly herbs (such as sage). Look for French tarragon, which can only be propagated from cuttings. If you see tarragon seeds, they’re the less desirable Russian tarragon. It’s hardy to zone 4, but the plant can be short-lived and may not overwinter.

No #7: Rosemary

A shrub in its native habitat, rosemary requires a large container with a well-drained soil mix and hot sun. Rosemary is not reliably hardy below zone 8, but small plants may overwinter indoors with bright sunlight.

Useful Tip:

Herbs get their amazing flavor and aroma from the essential oils they contain. Many herbs have the best flavor when they’re watered and fertilized sparingly, which increases the concentration of these oils.
