Vermont Volunteers Clean Up Lake Champlain Beaches for Nesting Turtles

Volunteers are expected to be out cleaning up northern Lake Champlain beaches to prepare sites for next year's nesting of spiny soft-shell turtles _ a threatened species in Vermont.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department's annual beach cleanup day takes place Saturday and starts in North Hero.

Volunteers are asked to arrive at North Hero State Park between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The group may move on to another site by 11. Children and families are welcome.

Volunteers will pull up vegetation on nesting beaches.

The volunteers may find a few hatchlings that occasionally remain in nests underground.

In addition to threatened spiny soft-shell turtles, the nesting sites are used by map turtles, painted turtles and snapping turtles.
