NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County authorities are planning to hold a large-scale simulation and active shooter exercise at the county's Government Center on Thursday, Oct. 19.

Officials said the public shouldn't be alarmed by the numerous emergency vehicles and personnel that will be involved in the drill, which will last from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Local businesses have been made aware of the drill and will remain open.

New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Fire Rescue, Emergency Management, Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover Regional EMS, and several other agencies will be participating in the exercise.

Planning for this large-scale exercise began more than a year ago. Officials said it will test law enforcement and emergency agency responses, and help inform facility-specific and county-agency action plans.

A county-wide policy and plan is in place to respond to active-shooter incidents to ensure that county employees are prepared should an unlikely incident of violence occur.
