For most of us, winter is no big deal. It means firing up the furnace, meals in the oven, turning up the hot water heater, and breaking out the ice-melt. But for many, it means staying warm however you can. Older stoves and non-functioning furnaces increase the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Loose handrails and slippery conditions mean falling hazards, and cold temperatures mean extra stress on often unsafe hot water heaters. We regularly encounter homes heated with toasters, ovens or stove tops, and/or electric blankets; baths taken with water heated on the stove; and people stuck in their homes, afraid of a fall going down the front steps.

Rebuilding Together Metro Denver makes these types of critical repairs that allow low-income homeowners to stay safe and healthy in their own homes. This is especially important as temperatures drop, snow falls, furnaces are burning and windows are closed.
