LET'S TALK ABOUT COGNAC

I am a wine & drink writer from Kenya and I am always tasting different brands of wines and spirits. So I got to interact some more with cognac. I am going to give you a crash course on how you can enjoy this fine drink.

What is Cognac?

Cognac is an expression of French luxury and it a drink made by the ugni blanc grapes under the French Appellation d'origine contrôlée. This simply describes the production and naming method. For the drink to be called cognac, it has to be made under this method. The brandy should be distilled twice in copper pot stills. It also needs to be aged for two years in oak barrels from the French region of Tronçais or Limousin.

What cognac brands are there?

There are many competing cognac brands in the world. The most common ones are Martell, Rémy Martin, De Luze, Hennesy and Courvoisier.

How do I enhance my cognac drinking experience?

You enhance your experience by being willing to learn. A bit of research beforehand would be great. If you have never had any cognac before, take the time to know what the drink is about and you will appreciate it even more. If you find a bottle that you don't like, don't give up there. Explore and try different bottles. Learn what your palate likes. For example, I did this with wine and whisk(e)y. Not every bottle of wine that I have had is great. I have learned to know what I love. In wine, I am more into heavy reds. For whisk(e)y, I am more into smoky and peaty favours. It is always a hit or miss when starting but with time, you get to know more!

What is the difference between VS, VSOP and XO?

You may have seen these words on cognac bottles.
VS is Very Special. It a blend where the youngest brandy is kept in barrels for 2 years.
V.S.O.P. is Very Superior Old Pale. It is a blend where the youngest brandy is kept in a cask for 4 years.
XO is Extra Old. It is blend where the youngest brandy is kept for 6 years in a cask.
The XO is the more rare and expensive version. if someone gifts you an XO, they love you a lot!

How do I serve Cognac?

Cognac is best served with a balloon glass. There is no need to swirl cognac heavily as you do with wine. First, pour a little bit of cognac into your balloon glass. Next, hold the glass with your hands and warm it with your hands. This will help the drink release all the flavours. Smell it, appreciate and savour it. However, know that every brand has its own specification on how best to enjoy it. It is best to read the bottle or ask your bartender to ensure you are getting the best experience. The bottle down below is the best. It is also called a brandy sifter glass.

How do I enjoy Cognac?

I realised that there are many ways to enjoy cognac. You can take it neat. You can add ice cubes or a dash or water and you can make some mean cocktails with it. There is nothing like a cognac Negroni! See the pictures below on how I enjoy it neat and on the rocks.

Can women take cognac?

There is a negative connotation associated with a woman who drinks. Women can enjoy alcoholic drinks just as men can. For example, I love my drinks but I always ensure that I drink responsibly.

Some things to avoid when taking cognac.

If you are drinking it for the sake of getting drunk/ hammered, you are missing the point. You take cognac to enjoy and savour it. Also, adding coke to your cognac is tantamount to sacrilege.

Resteemed and shared on Twitter. I really enjoy the brand in the last image. I like mine as you said with a cube and splash of soda.
And of course, a flavorful cigar, on occasion. I'd love to meet a woman that was versed in the drinking of spirits such as this. Alas, the search continues...

Nice one. Keep it up and keep wining.

@seyiodus.

Thank you dear for the support.

This is a great review, I love your tasting notes and the "How to enhance" section was really nice advice in general for all kinds of food and drink appreciation.

While this review is obviously original and your own photos are lovely, I would be careful about using product images that you didn't take yourself. Reviews are pretty well protected under fair use, but of course best practice is to take your own product photos and falling short of that using official promo/press images from the brand is next best (and providing the source link) - sourcing product images for a review from Google images is not generally advised. This article is a little old but is a pretty nice general summation of fair use as it specifically applies to online reviews:

Regardless of if using these images is covered under fair use, best practice here on Steemit is always to provide an image source for any image you do not yourself hold copyright to.

I really do enjoy your writing and am only offering this advice as a friendly suggestion. Wonderful post! Cheers - Carl "Totally not a bot" Gnash

It's good now. All the images are those that I took. Thanks.

Cool I think this actually looks better anyway! Your own photography is lovely and gives the post a more consistent feel throughout. Cheers - Carl

Thanks Carl, I couldn't agree more. I will put that in mind for future posts and credit when necessary. Have a lovely day. :)

There's seems to always be one in the crowd. image

This is awesome blogging at its best. I learned one or two things about drinks today. Thanks for sharing.

Hey @greenrun I am glad you learned something. I am looking at ways to sensitize people about drinks and responsible drinking.

Oh yeah. Thanks a lot.

If you are drinking it for the sake of getting drunk/ hammered, you are missing the point.

Whoops I have been doing it very wrong :P. Jk I have a friend who is really into cognac. He showed me how he drank it, and I must say the taste is much better if you take your time!

@jeanwandimi you are a great blogger! And I wonder if you would want to join our community and could teach others! I am from the #promo-steem community and I wish you could have a look!

How can I contact you? I am on discord and steemit.chat.

Hey @futurethinker Thank you so much. I am glad you got to get the full experience.

Thank you so much for the compliment. I'd love to join the community & connect with you on Discord. What's the link?

Sweet and brief.

"Also, adding coke to your cognac is tantamount to sacrilege."

I'll take it you agree that mixing an aged spirit is pure philistinism and sure be an offence worth of prisonment. Yes!?

Haha yes! I don't know who came up with that to be honest.
