Police: Nashville woman shot homeless man after he asked her to move her SUV

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Metro Nashville Police said a Tennessee 26-year-old faces charges on Monday for shooting a homeless man near Music Row in August.

According to the MNPD, Katie Quackenbush critically wounded Gerald Melton, 54, on August 26. Melton remains in the hospital as of Monday night.

Police said Melton was disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music from a Porsche SUV while trying to sleep on a 19th Avenue sidewalk around 3 a.m.

Melton asked Quackenbush to move the SUV, and an argument ensued. Police said Melton and Quackenbush yelled at each other.

After Melton walked back to the sidewalk where he attempted to sleep, MNPD said Quackenbush got out of the SUV with a weapon.

As the argument continued, she shot Melton twice. He suffered a critical abdomen wound.

Police said Quackenbush got back in the Porsche SUV and fled the scene.

She was charged with attempted murder and held on a $25,000 bond.

Previous charge in Texas

According to online court records, Quackenbush had a previous misdemeanor charge for assault in Texas in October 2013.

Amarillo Police said officers responded to an assault in the 3200 block of Milam Street in Amarillo just after 6 p.m. Ladeanna Piehl, 52, told officers that Quackenbush struck her in the upper arm with her forearm.

Police saw bruising on the Piehl's arm and arrested Quackenbush around 7 p.m. while on a follow-up call for domestic violence/family member assault.

She was later found not guilty for the charge.
