I have just returned from an exhilarating, if somewhat exhausting, trip to Mumbai as part of our international collaboration with Junoon Theatre.  A collaboration made possible through the British Council/Wales Arts International and Arts Council Wales as part of the UK/India year of culture. Our project Sisters is an exploration, an international conversation between female artistes in India and Wales and will explore ideas about our shared cultural heritage, our contemporary identities and what it means to be an Asian women today.

I spent a delightful week with some wonderful women. We laughed a lot and learnt a lot.

The content that is being generated is already rich and complex and our journey is only just beginning so who knows what will materialize in the coming weeks and months.

We laughed a lot!

I even managed to watch a film ‘Lipstick under my Bhurka’ in Hindi and was surprised by how much I understood.  A reminder that I once used to speak Punjabi and have lost that ability over the years!  And we had far too much popcorn!

In Wales, we are working with an equally dynamic and energised bunch of women, but more about them later. In the meantime, Shanaz Gulzar has been trying to steer us through how we might create a digital rehearsal room.

Proving a little challenging at times but we’re getting there. Updating content in a way that is easy for us to share material proved a little difficult.  Sometimes because many of us feel ill at ease at using social and digital platforms because we are digital novices, sometimes the infrastructure just didn’t work!

Skype, What’s App, Zoom, Youtube, Slack – you name it we’re playing with it!
