How to make the most of your visit to Kings Island

Only a short drive up Interstate 71 from Cincinnati, Kings Island can pack a lot of fun into a day.

Before you hop in the car, here's what you need to know before you go.

First, be sure to check the website for discounts on day passes, season passes and group bundles. You're best off buying tickets online for parking, too — a standard parking pass is $20 at the gate, but it's $15 online. (An extra $10 will get you a premium parking spot closer to the gate.)

Plus, then you can go paper-free: You can store your tickets on your phone or tablet for easy scanning at the gate, no printing required.

Want to avoid lines? A Fast Lane add-on to your ticket will let you skip long lines for rides if you pay an additional $55-70.

If that's too pricey, try timing your visit on a weekday and arrive close to the park opening at 10 a.m. if you want to beat the crowds.

Next, pack your bag with the essentials: sunscreen, shades, a swimsuit and towel if you're planning to visit the water park. What not to bring: outside food or drink. They're not allowed inside the park.

Once you're inside, there's lots to do, whether you're a serious thrill-seeker or you're seriously scared of roller coasters.

For the thrill-lovers: Try the Vortex, a roller coaster that reaches 55 mph on its track of loops and turns.

For kiddos: Planet Snoopy is a part of the park with lots of kid-friendly rides featuring the classic Peanuts characters.

When you need a break or a bite: There's plenty of park fare, including Skyline Chili and Starbucks. (Consider not eating anything too heavy before a particularly twirly ride.)
