Seasonal Employment Opportunities
The Forest Service is holding several different hiring events. There will be permanent seasonal positions advertised as well as temporary seasonal positions for a variety of locations and types of work.
Permanent seasonals are classified as a permanent employee and are eligible for health insurance benefits, retirement contribution, and pay raises. Permanent seasonals work a portion of the year, not year-round. They are generally classified as 13/13 or 18/8 which means they work 13 pay periods with 13 pay periods off or work 18 pay periods with 8 pay periods off. You will not have to reapply for the position the next year; you can work season after season.
Temporary seasonals are classified as a 1039 which means they are allowed to work 1,039 hours under their contract. Temporary seasonals do not have to work the full number of hours. They receive health benefits but no retirement benefits.
- There will be several job/vacancy announcements for seasonal and permanent seasonal positions for the Sawtooth National Forest.
- Hiring is for many different positions on the Forest but will be posted under a few broad vacancy announcements.
- There is a short window in which applicants can apply for positions.

Sawtooth Fire School
Want to become a wildland firefighter? Get the certifications you need to start your seasonal or fulltime job now! The Sawtooth National Forest is holding a course to teach and recruit new firefighters. This training will provide students with skills and certificates to be qualified as basic firefighters and will give them the tools needed to start their career or seasonal job as a wildland firefighter for the Sawtooth National Forest.

The Intermountain Region Fire Hire program has been implemented to streamline the hiring process for permanent fire positions, and allow for more consistent hiring around the Region. This change of the hiring process is in response to a continual vacancy situation that all national forests in the Intermountain Region currently face. The unique feature of this process is the ability to immediately backfill positions that have been vacated
The Sawtooth National Forest is looking for a committed, hardworking, highly skilled workforce to work in wildland fire suppression and in fuels management in South Central Idaho. The fire and aviation management program is very rewarding and requires talented people working safely as part of a team in a variety of specialized positions; including dispatch, apprentice, engine crews, fuels management, hand crews, helitack, interagency hotshot crews, and prevention.
Pathways Program
The Forest Service is implementing the Pathways Program which provides an opportunity for federal internships for students from high school through post-graduate school and careers for recent graduates.
