From Black Mirror to Bear Grylls, interactive entertainment continues to grow in popularity, and now The Haunting of Hill House's Mike Flanagan is taking a stab at it.

Set to be directed by The Hills Have Eyes' Alexandre Aja, Flanagan has created an interactive haunted house movie idea with screenwriter Jeff Howard, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners (via Collider).

Judging by the company's catalogue of titles – The House with a Clock in Its Walls, The BFG and Ready Player One – this forthcoming project might be more family-friendly than Flanagan and Aja's past work.

But then again, Amblin was also involved in The Haunting of Hill House, so all bets are off.

Collaborating with Kino Industries' CtrlMovie technology, this will allow Amblin Partners to create something termed 'branched narrative', which basically just means interactive features that see the audience dictating the storyline.

Armed with a mobile app, viewers can vote in the cinema screening to decide which characters will do what during pivotal moments in the movie, meaning that this haunted house experience will have a different running time, ending and plot for most audience groups.

Aside from crafting interactive projects, Hill House's Flanagan has been busy with several other movies over the past year. His latest Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep is scheduled for release this November.
