The Mozambican government will make space available for private operators to conduct business at six airports, the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) has announced in a tender.
“A master plan for the development of each aerodrome in the non-aviation component, in the concept of airport mini-cities with tourism and airport support infrastructures is to be presented,” the MTC note quoted today by newspaper Noticias reads.
The concessions will cover the airports of Beira, Maputo, Quelimane, Lichinga, Chimoio and Nampula, with plans including the construction of hotels, event venues, car parks, air navigation support services, gas stations, car hire and car wash facilities.
In addition to monetising airports, the goal is to encourage the development of the tourism industry, the press release adds.
Transport and Communications Minister Carlos Mesquita recently said the government was concerned about the level of indebtedness of airport companies.
“Debt should be viewed with the necessary serenity and responsibility, and the company [Aeoportos de Moçambique/AdM] should continue its ongoing efforts with partners to reprogramme and meet fully the commitments made,” Minister Mesquita said.
