This year has proven to be great as far as astronomical events are concerned. We have already had three supermoons this year, but May brings an end to that series by bringing the last supermoon of the year 2020.

The next full moon will be on Thursday, May 7, 2020.

It will reach its peak at 6:45 a.m. EDT which is 4:15 pm in IST. However if you are worried that you will not be able to see super moon then do not be. According to NASA, the moon this month will appear dull for about three days! From Tuesday evening till Friday morning. May 7, is the day it will bask in its full glory.

May’s full moon is known as the ‘Super Flower Moon’. It is named on the arrival of spring flowers. It is also known as the Corn Planting Moon, Milk Moon, the Vesak Festival Moon.

The full moon of May corresponds to Vesak, also known as Buddha Purnima, a holiday observed by Buddhists across Asia. This day commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha. The date of Vesak varies every year, but this year for most places it falls on or near the day of this full Moon.

According to NASA, ‘The term "supermoon" was coined by the astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 and refers to either a new or full Moon that occurs within 90% of perigee, its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit’.

The next supermoon will not occur till April 2021! So mark the date to look up to the last one of the year 2020.
