How tech can foster true diversity

Last year's protests calling for racial justice prompted tech giants such as Apple, Google and Facebook to publicly commit to increasing diversity, equity and inclusion in their respective workforces. So far, some major initiatives have been laid out, but as AI scientist and tech diversity advocate Tania Mishra writes in Fast Company, the industry has historically had trouble following through. And controversies like Google's firing of AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru in December added to the skepticism that the industry is seeking authentic change.


In order to make lasting strides, Mishra calls on tech leaders to:


  • Build early career pipelines for underrepresented people
  • Focus on retention through mentorship
  • Engage decision-makers at all levels and roles in solving the problem
