- Kanye West plans to build prefabricated, low-income housing for LA's homeless population.
- West is drawing inspiration from Star Wars, modeling the structures after Luke Skywalker's home on Tatooine.
Rapper and fashion mogul Kanye West has set his sights on creating affordable, prefabricated housing for homeless people in Los Angeles. The inspiration for the igloo-like structures is none other than Luke Skywalker's home on the the desert planet of Tatooine.
Forbes reports that West already has prototypes in the works that "look like the skeletons of wooden spaceships ... each oblong and dozens of feet tall."
According to the prototypes, West's vision calls for the homes to be sunk into the ground, with natural light coming in through the top of the units. The housing project aligns with West's overall goal to expand his Yeezy fashion empire to an architectural branch, Yeezy Home.
It isn't hard to see how Star Wars has influenced West's architectural tastes. The custom $60 million Hidden Hills home he shares with wife Kim Kardashian seems to parallel the barren, monochrome land of Tatooine.
In true Ye fashion, the interior is sparsely decorated, and the monochromatic color scheme is shades of light beige and off-white. Even the minimal furniture melts into the floors and walls because everything follows the same color scheme.
West clearly has a design aesthetic—austere monochrome minimalism—that shows in his Yeezy clothing and Adidas shoe lines. We expect his architectural endeavors will follow the same design scheme.
