Tuition fee prices have been a factor that hindered the education for people from low income neighborhoods. Many poor children have not attended school because their guardians cannot provide for their tuition fee, projects and other expenses that may come with going to school.

However, primary and secondary education are basically free in the Philippines for quite some time. And just recently, tertiary education in SUCs has also been made free.

To battle poverty and other problems that hinders children from going to school and acquiring necessary education, a school in India started accepting recyclable plastic as payment for tuition fee.

The eco-friendly idea was from the minds of the couple – Mazin Muktar and Parmita Sarma – who are both teachers.

They both started seeing each other in 2013. After noticing, the problems in their area, they both came up with solutions.

First, they put up a school in Akshar, Assam that offered free education for poor students.

Only a few students attended their school at first despite of the free education. This is because parents let their kids go to work instead of sending them to school.

The couple then saw the waste disposal and management problem in the area that triggered them to come up with another idea.

They started asking their students to bring plastic bottles as tuition fee. An excellent idea to solve two problems with one solution.

This is according to an article from Pinoy Patrol.

The submitted plastic wastes are then recycled into useful items like ornamental lamps. A part of it is also sold to junk shops to gain a little bit of money for their school.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
