HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Witnesses say a surfer was knocked off his board and into the water by an eight-foot shark in waters off Diamond Head on Tuesday morning.

The surfer does not appear to have been injured, and other surfers in the area at the time of the incident say the man was not bitten during the encounter.

Still, coming face-to-face with a shark can be an anxiety-inducing event — especially, witnesses say, when the animal appears to be acting aggressively.

“This thing was on top of him and trying to attack him,” said Jonah Kogen, who was in the water when the encounter occurred. “I had no doubt in my mind it was going to take him.”

Kogen says the shark disappeared, and everyone who was in the water in the area quickly paddled in.
