La Botanica di Leonardo (The Botany of Leonardo)

For a new science between art and nature

Green Renaissance. The systemic thought of Leonardo da Vinci and his look at the natural world for a new cultural and scientific Renaissance.

Florence celebrates the brightest of the thinkers, son of the Italian Renaissance, five-hundred years after his death. From 13 September through 15 December, the Santa Maria Novella Museum is to host a show designed and produced by Aboca, on Leonardo’s systemic approach to the arts and science. Therefore, the shapes and processes that led his investigation on the relationship between the man and nature. And so, the exhibit comes to life throughout the city with the reproduction of the five Platonic solids positioned in different squares to represent as many elements of the cosmos. Closing the exhibit in a majestic way that symbolizes Leonardo’s genius, is a polyhedra a dodecahedron wrapped in a forest of majestic plants. This installation allows the public to have the opportunity to experience firsthand how nature has been and can return to be the center of harmony in the world and of our eco system.

Where shape comes alive with light

In the Santa Maria Novella Museum, the exhibit opens up to visitors in a lush, illuminated forest. An green invasion in a sacred space, handled by the Guicciardini & Magni architectural firm in collaboration with lighting designer Fulvio Baldeschi and Linea Light Group. The approach is dual: lively and dynamic lighting of the environment, static and spotlights with beams to enhance the works on display.

A double, mirrored stage duplicates a vertically developed forest at the entrance. A scenic opening supported from below by Periskop, an aluminium spotlight with powerLED source, black finishing and 30° optics. To reproduce the contrasts of a living nature in an imaginative way, a series of Navata strips was used, DALI-controlled spotlights, for a light-dark play of various intensities. The cyclic increasing and decreasing of luminous power allows true light waves to be achieved for an effect that is fully reminiscent of the vitality of the forest.

Countless Eyelets were positioned on the vases that line the entire perimeter of the exhibit. Adjustable and small in size, they provide a secure minimalistic aesthetic effect. Tee and Beret light the main showcase, whereas Xenia Wall, inserted in the supporting parallelepiped at the base of the display walls, is the true crown-jewel of the Linea Light Group products. A linear profile with high brightness and flexibility with adjustment directed toward the walls thanks to a riser at the base of the body that allows the elimination of glaring and use free of any visual discomfort and reverberation.

Closing out the path, the dodecahedron is spectacularly supported by a lighting dialogue with LED strips set in the structure and facing inward. In the refectory, in the garden of the Santa Maria Novella cloister, the polyhedra are located, illuminated by Periskop RGBW spotlights.
