Good Friday is the commemoration of Christ trial and death at Calvary.
In the Biblical account of the gospels, Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane and taken for trial.
The next morning, he stands before Pontius Pilate who eventually ask the crowd what they would like done with Jesus. The people yell “crucify him”.
Pilate, who declared Jesus innocent, washes his hands wanting no part of the matter.
Jesus carries his cross to Golgotha or the place of the skull {with the assistance of Simon of Cyrene}.
Jesus is hung on the cross between two thieves where he agonies for six hours. During the last three hours darkness fell over the whole land from noon until 3pm.
After crying out “”My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus gives up his spirit. There is an earthquake, tombs break open and the curtain in the Temple was torn from top to bottom. This act allows God’s people to know directly advocate before God instead of needing a temple High Priest to serve as intercessor.
Upon Jesus death, a sword pierces his side and his blood spills out. Then Joseph of Arimathea takes is body to be buried in his tomb.
While Good Friday is not a federal holiday, the stock markets are closed.
In German-speaking countries, Good Friday is generally referred to as Karfreitag or mourning Friday.
