CERTIFIED — Canton Police Department Sergeant Neal Swanger poses with his advanced law enforcement certificate while his son Jaxson and wife Amy look on.
Canton Police Department Sgt. Neal Swanger was awarded his advanced law enforcement certificate during a town board meeting Thursday, Jan. 23.
Advanced certifications, which are awarded to officers across the state by the N.C. Department of Justice, require a college degree, 500 hours of training and at least 12 years of law enforcement experience.
“If it hadn’t been for my family, there’s no way I could have done this, the understanding and support,” Swanger said, turning to his wife. “Amy, thank you. I appreciate it.”
The board extended its commendations. Alderman Ralph Hamlett prompted the board and about 30 in attendance at Canton Town Hall, including family and fellow CPD officers, to give Swanger a standing ovation.
“Any leader is only as good as his subordinates,” Swanger said. “We’ve got a very good group of guys and girls working for us now, so if it wasn’t for them, none of this would be possible.”
Swanger is a 13-year veteran of Canton Police Department, and the third officer on staff to receive an advanced law enforcement certificate.
Also at the Canton Town Board meeting Jan. 23, Certified Public Accountant Sheila Gahagan presented an unmodified opinion of the town’s audit, which means she did not find any discrepancies in their accounting.
“The town is in a very positive economic position,” Gahagan said.
The board donated $500 to Pisgah High School’s band, as requested by the program, and a $150 donation was made to Canton Middle School to help purchase yearbooks for eighth grade students.
The next meeting of the Canton Town Board is in Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13.
