Halma, the fire alarm and security technology company, has bought Navtech Radar, a developer of “smart” motorway technology and perimeter security systems, for £21 million.

Navtech, based in Wantage, Oxfordshire, combines radar, cameras and software to create road safety and real-time incident detection systems for tunnels and motorways. It also makes perimeter protection systems for airports and other sites.

Andrew Williams, chief executive of Halma, said that Navtech had “valuable intellectual property in radar-based hardware and software” and would become part of Halma’s infrastructure safety business.

The deal was completed on Wednesday. Halma, which is valued at about £5 billion, is based in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. The FTSE 100 company’s shares rose by 27p to close at £13.36.
