In 2021, my sister was diagnosed with colon cancer.
A year before that, her symptoms were ignored.
This year her cancer came back. She had surgery to remove the tumour.
About a decade ago, I presented my doctor with symptoms of endometriosis. A decade later in 2023, I had the surgery, and it was removed.
First- this Thanksgiving, I am so grateful to both of our surgeons for their excellent work. Both excisions were successful - and my sister's saved her life.
I am grateful for my O.B. - the 4th or 5th one I’ve seen- believed me. He changed my life.
Here is how my sister's experience impacted me: From when it started, she would always say to me: advocate for yourself. Don't let anyone dismiss or downplay your symptoms. Don’t wait. Be persistent.
Medical gaslighting is still an unfortunate reality for many women around the world- even women like myself and my sister- our family jokes it could staff a hospital.
Whether it’s a chronic issue or one where your life is at risk- medical gaslighting impacts quality of life and disease development that could impact the prognosis for life itself.
If you are reading this, and you have symptoms that have been bothering you- never feel like a bother, and do not give up. You are so worth it.
Unfortunately, working in the women's health space- I hear about this same story all too often. Which is also what makes me really excited about a future where data helps women advocate for themselves, and get access to the care they need.
Every human deserves to thrive. When we solve prevention, particularly for women- it will have a cascading impact on the lives of women, and everyone in her community.
