Selena Gomez’s upcoming horror thriller Dollhouse now has a director. The “Bad Liar” singer will star in and produce the picture, which is set in the world of New York City’s elite fashion scene. The film is being described as similar to 2010’s Black Swan, the psychological ballet thriller which saw Natalie Portman’s Nina descend into madness. Black Swan was praised by both critics and audiences and bagged Portman her first Academy Award. The film went on to achieve a cult status.

According to Deadline, Emma Tammi will be helming Dollhouse. The New York filmmaker is best known for the horror western The Wind, which was praised for its atmosphere and effective scares. [Tammi] has an incredible sense of story, pacing, and timing that is equally matched by her eye for unforgettable visuals,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of STXfilms Motion Picture Group.

Although Gomez is best known for her music, audiences have enjoyed the singer’s film credits, including the Hotel Transylvania films and an unexpected turn in Spring Breakers. Gomez was also a driving force behind 13 Reasons Why’s TV adaptation, joining the project as an executive producer. A decade of horror has passed since Black Swan hit theatres, but horror fans are still yet to see anything like it. With Fogelson highlighting Tammi’s “unforgettable visuals”, audiences will be encouraged that Dollhouse will earn its comparisons to the Darren Aronofsky classic. The news that two women will front the film will also encourage horror fans, who have welcomed a rise in female-fronted spooks including Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and Rose Glass’ Saint Maud.
