Students in the Campbell Union School District were gifted this month with STEM kits for them to use in their distance learning this fall.
Volunteers from the Assistance League of Los Gatos-Saratoga took two months to assemble 34,000 STEM kits for K-5 students in the district to perform five science experiments at home in conjunction with the district’s Mystery Science curriculum. Topics range from how leaves change color to differences in bird beaks, and from the friction and pattern of motion to the structure and function of the human eye.
The League also assembled 1,500 art and writing kits for kindergarteners through second-graders. These kits include a journal for students to write about their shelter-in-place experiences, a book about “Why We Stay Home during COVID-19” and art supplies.
Assembling these kits represents a major shift in program presentation for the Assistance League, whose projects have traditionally supported classroom learning. At the request of Campbell Union School District, the League mobilized volunteers to support online instruction.
