December Newsletter

Welcome to the final SES newsletter for 2018.  Before you head off to enjoy the holiday festivities, here's a round up of what's been happening and our upcoming February event to keep you in the loop.

ISIS: Access the atomic scale
SES, Imperial College London and the Science and Technology Facilities Council offer researchers from across the UK an open invitation to join us in discovering how the ISIS facility can harness materials research through atomic-level insights.

Neutron scattering facilities such as ISIS have been responsible for the emergence of a world-class research programme covering topics at the forefront of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Earth Science, Engineering, Biology and more. This event brings together researchers from across the ISIS facility to discuss the reach and potential of research with neutron and muon instruments – where are we now? What does the future of atomic-level research look like? What kind of fields can exploit this technology? We welcome existing ISIS and Diamond users, PhD students and Post Docs who are interested in working with ISIS, as well as other academics/researchers who may be interested in harnessing the facility.  An introduction to ISIS will be provided alongside a selection of researcher case studies and a panel session.  A draft programme is available online. Confirmed speakers include:
  •  Prof. Nick Jennings, Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) at Imperial College London, for Welcome Address
  • Prof. Sean Langridge, STFC Fellow, Diffraction & Materials Division Head at ISIS, for An Introduction to ISIS
  • Dr. Jacqui Cole, Head of Molecular Engineering Group at the University of Cambridge, for a user case study on ISIS and scientific computing.
  • Dr. Anthony Phillips, Senior Lecturer in Condensed Matter and Materials Physics at Queen Mary University of London for a user case study in materials structure and functional properties
  • Prof. João T. Cabral, Professor of Soft Matter Engineering at Imperial College London for a user case study in microfluidics for soft matter processing.

In research news, we're showcasing two inspiring and collaborative projects this month:
  • LEAF - The countless benefits and developments in scientific research are widely known and recognised by society, from better drugs to safer materials and faster technology. However, there’s a rarely reported on ‘dark side’ to science where the materials and energy cost to deliver excellent research, both financially and environmentally, are piling up.  Fortunately, an exciting new tool is currently being piloted across the UK (including four SES universities) in an endeavour to standardise best practice across research efficiency, sustainability and quality.
  • Unlocking Cells' Secrets - With the NHS celebrating its 70th birthday this year, it’s an appropriate time to reflect on the vital role of drug discovery in the never-ending drive to improve healthcare – and on the ground-breaking research that makes such discoveries possible. A well-established collaboration between teams at Oxford University and UCL is generating deeper understanding of the innermost workings of the central nervous system.
This month we're also joined by Roxana Carare, Professor of Clinical Neuroanatomy and experimental neuropathology at the University of Southampton's Department of Medicine.  She discusses how the build-up of plaque in the brain could be the key to Alzheimer’s research and reveals why women need to work harder through dietary interventions and exercise to prevent Alzheimer’s disease than men.
