Vote up the Niagara Falls stories that send a shiver down your spine.

It makes perfect sense that Niagara Falls, on both the Canadian and US sides, would be haunted. The area is rich in history - in fact, it's packed with centuries of stories, from Native American legends to the conflicts that erupted when the first settlers arrived. The War of 1812 hangs heavily over the region, as do the many skirmishes between early colonists and the Iroquois, and their ghosts continue to haunt the area.

Niagara Falls legends include tales of historic buildings, creepy caves, and other spooky natural wonders, not to mention the falls themselves, which have seen a plethora of people go over them in various vessels. As you can guess, some made it, but most didn't.

The falls and the area surrounding them have taken many a life, and to say the place is a hotbed for spiritual energy is an understatement. If you're a ghost hunter, check out these Niagara Falls ghost stories and tell us which haunts are your favorites and which we missed. Happy hunting! And don't let these Niagara Falls ghost stories keep you up at night!

Also known as the "Blue Ghost Tunnel," the Screaming Tunnel was built at the turn of the 20th century as a drainage system for the train tracks overhead in Niagara Falls, Ontario. According to legend, around 100 years ago, the tunnel was on fire, and a little girl who lived nearby got caught inside. In another version of the story, an unknown perpetrator took the girl's life and burned her remains in the tunnel in an attempt to hide the deed.

Her spirit remains there, and when someone lights a match or a lighter, people who live nearby can hear her piercing scream.

Spirits Stroll Through Drummond Hill Cemetery

Drummond Hill Cemetery in Niagara Falls was the site of one of the War of 1812's most gruesome skirmishes. Two thousand men perished on the grounds, and their specters still haunt the cemetery. Some are seen dressed as red coats marching into the field or falling where they eventually met their ends.

At the end of one Niagara Ghost Bus Tour, some guests turned back and looked out the window to see their shadows hovering around the headstones. As they told the other passengers, the apparitions vanished.

An Angry Bride Roams The Halls Of The Red Coach Inn

Built in 1923, the Red Coach Inn has been a favorite of tourists visiting the area since its opening. Staffers are only too happy to add to its legacy as a paranormal site by telling visitors stories of the things that go bump in the night. During an episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories, Love Boat actor Bernie Kopell told the story of a bride gliding through the hotel hallway whose face had been horribly mutilated.

Visitors have heard music in the middle of the night, as well as people walking and dancing above them while staying on the top floor.

If you plan to visit Devil's Hole, do so at your own risk. It's a challenging hike on an uneven stone staircase that goes down to the base of the Niagara River. Spirits are said to inhabit the place, and it's home to the "Cave of the Evil Spirit," so named by Native Americans because it allegedly curses anyone who dares enter it.

When the British passed through the area in 1763, they were ambushed by the Seneca Nation, and 80 of them were mortally wounded. Almost once a year, someone perishes in Devil's Hole by either falling or succumbing to the water.

The Spilled Blood Of A Couple Appears At The Glenview Mansion

It is said that the apparitions who haunt the Glenview Mansion in Niagara Falls, Ontario, are the result of gruesome acts that occurred there. The "Pink Palace" was built in the 1860s. The first life was taken not long after that when a conman tried to sell the home to an immigrant.

The second terrible event occurred in the early 1900s. A couple leaving a party at the residence was ended in the driveway, and their attackers were never found. Since then, their blood is said to reappear on the pavement where they fell.

A Ghostly Little Girl Roams The Halls Of The Echo Club

Once a single-family home, a community center, and a bar/restaurant, the Echo Club is for sale as of 2019. Whoever buys this historic property will have to take its ghostly tenants, as well. The most recent owners described a little girl that had been seen in the washroom by patrons; she disappeared after they inquired as to the whereabouts of her parents.

Others have described more malicious poltergeist activity from a spirit who throws plates and screams at patrons. There are also plenty of orbs to be seen. Buyer, beware!

A Lady In White Haunts The 'Old Stone Jug'

The "Old Stone Jug" is located right across the US border in Canada. Built in 1885, the building is most well-known as a location for the Marilyn Monroe movie Niagara, which was made in 1953.

At diferent times, it also served as a post office, a customs house, and a police station, but after a fire in 1984, it was abandoned and left to rot. Locals say they have seen a woman in a white dress walking in front of the second-floor windows.

The Lewiston Public Library's Ancient Artifacts May Be Responsible For Its Haunting

Lewiston is one town over from Niagara Falls and has its share of ghosts, one of which haunts the town's public library. A 2016 ghost hunt by paranormal experts revealed a ball of energy that set their electromagnetic frequency meter off, and team members also reported cold spots and static electricity, all of which are signs of a haunting.

Staffers and patrons have also reported ghostly activity, and one of them even saw a shadow disappear in one of the aisles. The library has Native American artifacts on permanent display, which were removed from a nearby burial ground, and some people believe these are the cause of hauntings.

A Hotel Patron Who Blackmailed Its Owners May Haunt The Lewiston Frontier House

The Lewiston Frontier House was built in 1824 and has operated as everything from a hotel to a McDonald's in its lifetime. The place is indeed haunted, as former owner Richard Hastings attests. "Have I seen the ghosts? Not really. Have I heard them? Yes. Sounds, screeches," he said.

As he tells it, a man named William Morgan stayed on the hotel's top floor and met a dubious fate. It is he who may be the cause of the hauntings: "He blackmailed or threatened to expose the secrets of the lodge. (They) found him guilty of breaking the oath, put some concrete shoes on him, and he disappeared... there's been certain things and times that I've heard noises and doors moving."

A Seminary Student Who Perished In A Fire Haunts Niagara University

For students living in the Clet Hall dormitory at Niagara Unversity, Thomas Hopkins is just another resident; however, he perished in a fire there in 1864. Hopkins is said to be friendly and, at most, mischievous. Clet Hall graduate hall director Marty Bourke said he's come across water running from faucets, heard someone walking the halls and laughing, and seen doors swing open when no one was in the building during summer breaks.

Clet custodian Don Hathaway agrees as to the existence of Hopkins, saying there have been a few times he's been spooked, as well. He claims, "You hear a lot of noises in the whole building. Especially from the first-floor theater. Weird stuff. You never know what it is. On Saturday, you sometimes hear somebody walking around, even though it's quiet and peaceful."

The Deafening Sound Of The Falls Comes From Heno, The God Of Thunder Who Lived Beneath Them

Some local Native Americans tell the tale of a widow who could not get over her husband's passing and the misfortune that followed it. She got in a canoe, paddled into the middle of the Niagara River, and went over the falls, where the god of thunder, Heno, caught her and brought her to his home behind them. After he nursed her back to health, she fell in love with his son, and the family lived together near the falls.

However, she still longed to see the people she once knew. Heno informed her that a snake was coming to feast on them, and she was allowed to warn them and return home. When she foiled his plans, the snake sought vengeance. He and Heno went fought, and Heno's home was ruined in the process. The family moved to the sky, where they still watch over the people below, and Heno's voice can still be heard in the rumbling of the falls.
