Fake Truth (Ian Ludlow Thrillers, 3) Paperback – April 7, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
The only thing more dangerous than fake news is fake truth in this exhilarating thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg.
Author Ian Ludlow writes great adventures…but after helping Chinese movie star Wang Mei defect to the United States, he becomes the accidental hero of a real-life espionage thriller. Now he’s stuck with the actress―and suffering a nasty case of writer’s block―when he stumbles into a secret Russian plot using “fake news” to outrage Americans into believing a terrifying lie.
It’s up to Ian and Margo French, his researcher-turned-spy, to discover the connection between a barbaric drug lord in Mexico, a homicidal maniac in California, a rogue citizen army in Texas, a raging TV pundit in New York, and two dead tourists in Portugal…before the president of the United States makes a catastrophic mistake that could resurrect the Soviet Union.
The only weapon Ian has against the global conspiracy, and the assassins who are closing in on him, is his vivid imagination. If his story isn’t a killer thriller, he’s dead.

Review
“At the start of bestseller Goldberg’s entertaining third Ian Ludlow novel, Ludlow, the author of a bestselling series starring macho freelance superspy Clint Straker, returns…Goldberg continues to inject a welcome dose of levity into the thriller genre.” ―Publishers Weekly
“Delightfully outrageous…There are shootouts, bombings, car chases, and plenty of almost slapstick―but still murderous―mayhem. There are hilarious lines, too. Here’s a waiter with ‘a nose so large it looked like he’d grown a thick mustache to help support its weight.’ For readers who enjoy madcap action. And a good laugh.” ―Booklist
“Fake Truth promises to be the most over-the-top, electrifying book in the series so far―making it a no-brainer for readers looking for a fun and thrilling read.” ―The Real Book Spy
“A pedal-to-the-metal, full-on page turner.” ―Christopher Reich, New York Times bestselling author
Praise for Lee Goldberg’s Ian Ludlow Series:
“Goldberg has crafted a clever, silly, and exciting thriller that showcases a love for the genre and the world of writing.” ―Associated Press
“If great pacing with awesome characters is what keeps you up at night, then make a pot of coffee and open this book.” ―Crimespree Magazine
“A delight from start to finish, a round-the-world, thrill-a-minute, laser-guided missile of a book.” ―Joseph Finder, New York Times bestselling author of Judgment

About the author

#1 New York Times Bestselling Author
Lee Goldberg is an ex-Navy SEAL, nuclear physicist and a professional Daniel Craig impersonator.
Okay, that's not true. But he wants this biography to be really exciting, so pay attention. If things bog down, I've been instructed to add a car chase or some explicit sex.
Here's the real story. Lee Goldberg writes books and television shows.
His mother wanted him to be a doctor, and his grandfather wanted him to go into the family furniture business. Instead, he put himself through UCLA as a freelance journalist, writing for such publications as American Film, Starlog, Newsweek, The Los Angeles Times Syndicate, The Washington Post and The San Francisco Chronicle (He also wrote erotic letters to the editor for Playgirl at twenty-five-dollars-a-letter, but he doesn't tell people about that, he just likes to boast about those "tiffany" credits).
He published his first book ".357 Vigilante" (as "Ian Ludlow," so he'd be on the shelf next to Robert Ludlum) while he was still a UCLA student. The West Coast Review of Books called his debut "as stunning as the report of a .357 Magnum, a dynamic premiere effort," singling the book out as "The Best New Paperback Series" of the year. Naturally, the publisher promptly went bankrupt and he never saw a dime in royalties. (But the books are available on the Kindle as "The Jury Series")
Welcome to publishing, Lee.
His subsequent books include the non-fiction books "Successful Television Writing" and "Unsold Television Pilots" ("The Best Bathroom Reading Ever!" San Francisco Chronicle) as well as the novels "My Gun Has Bullets" ("It will make you cackle like a sitcom laugh track," Entertainment Weekly), "Dead Space" ("Outrageously entertaining," Kirkus Reviews), "Watch Me Die" ("as dark and twisted as anything Hammet or Chandler ever dreamed up," Kirkus Reviews).
"Take me now," she moaned, "you hot writer stud."
She tore off her clothes and tackled him onto the floor, unable to control her raging lust. Nothing excited her more than being around a writer with a big list of books.
Got your attention again? Good. I don't know about you, but I was starting to nod off. Where was I? Oh yes...
Goldberg broke into television with a freelance script sale to "Spenser: For Hire." Since then, his TV writing & producing credits have covered a wide variety of genres, including sci-fi (SeaQuest), cop shows (Hunter, The Glades), martial arts (Martial Law), whodunits (Diagnosis Murder, Nero Wolfe), the occult (She-Wolf of London), kid's shows (R.L. Stine's The Nightmare Room), T&A (Baywatch), comedy (Monk) and utter crap (The Highwayman). His TV work has earned him two Edgar Award nominations from the Mystery Writers of America.
His two careers, novelist and TV writer, merged when he began writing the "Diagnosis Murder" series of original novels, based on the hit CBS TV mystery that he also wrote and produced, and later wrote the 15 bestselling novels based on "Monk," another show that he worked on. He is co-creator of the hit Hallmark movie series "Mystery 101." He also he teamed up with Janet Evanovich to write the #1 New York Times bestselling Fox & O'Hare novels ("The Heist," "The Chase," "The Job," "The Scam," "The Pursuit"). His most recent books include "Movieland" (the 4th novel in the Eve Roninseries), "Malibu Burning" (the first novel in the Sharpe & Walker series) and the genre-bending thriller "Calico."
But perhaps he's best known for his pioneering work mapping the human genome and negotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Goldberg lives in Los Angeles with his wife and his daughter and still sleeps in "Man From UNCLE" pajamas.

Too often lately, life has been like one of Ian Ludlow's novels come to life. Which is a lot of pressure to work under, so much so that he's in danger of missing a deadline to submit his next book, without even getting it started.
Meanwhile, Wang Mei, the Chinese actress Ludlow recently helped defect, needs a job. And she's decided that seducing him is the way to achieve that. Ludlow's got connections, and he happens to be the only American she knows who trusts her. Ludlow is actually pretty easy to seduce, not only does he help her get a job on a TV show, he helps her with some PR to rehabilitate her image (with CIA guidance).
But back to the main story, Margo gets Ludlow brainstorming like he used to—not only to get a novel working, but she's pretty sure that he'll end up stumbling over an assignment so she can exercise her new-found skills. The official blurb sums up what they stumble upon in 1/3 of the words I'd take, so let's use it:
...the connection between a barbaric drug lord in Mexico, a homicidal rapist in California, a rogue citizens army in Texas, a raging TV pundit in New York, and two dead tourists in Portugal…before the President of the United States makes a catastrophic mistake that could resurrect the Soviet Union.
That sounds utterly ludicrous, but as things unfold it seems utterly plausible—and like something only a guy like Ludlow could uncover. And when it comes time for Ludlow and Margo (with help from Wang Mei and Ronnie Mancuso) to stop this plot—the brakes come off and things get really ridiculous. I had a blast with it.
Goldberg once again pulls off this great magic trick by taking a ridiculous plot and goofy humor and somehow creating a solid thriller. I've seen others try this and it doesn't work out quite as well. If he can keep this up, I'll come back as long as he's able to publish these. Laughs and action, characters you can enjoy (even if you don't think you'd want to be anywhere near them in real life)—Fake Truth is a great way to spend some time.

An entertaining read, as usual. I look forward to the next in the series.

The book is readable, especially the denouement where there is much more action and involvement of the main protagonists of this book series. Similarly enjoyable as the first 2 books, with similar plot points hence quite predictable. The pop references to movies and TV series are non trendy, but understandable by an older generation. Recommend as pulp fiction.
