MoviePass is apparently trying to launch new plans, including an unlimited option

MoviePass, the company that once provided unlimited movie tickets, then changed its plans again and again, is apparently trying to relaunch the service with, get this, another unlimited plan.

The news comes from Variety and outlines a new pricing model with new plans that also includes an unlimited option.

According to the report, MoviePass will start offering new plans that should target different types of movie-goers. One plan, referred to as ‘Select,’ will allow people to see three movies per month, but doesn’t include 3D movies and IMAX. It starts at $9.99 per month. The ‘Red Carpet’ plan starts at $19.99 per month and also allows for three movies, but doesn’t put restrictions on 3D and IMAX.

The key word here is starts. Because MoviePass apparently has no clue on how convenience works, these plans will vary in price depending on your location. In the Midwest, where movies are less expensive to attend, the prices above reflect the actual pricing. Slide over to the east a bit, and in places like New York, and these plans go up to $14.95 and $24.95 respectively.

How this coverage map exactly works hasn’t been revealed, but it sounds convoluted and considering the company’s many instances of backtracking and changing prices, something that doesn’t sound very desirable.

But what about unlimited movies?

That’s apparently on the way as well. Khalid Itum, executive VP of MoviePass, tells Variety that an unlimited plan is also in the works, with plans to reveal that in the coming weeks. While it is not directly stated in Variety’s reporting or anywhere else, I imagine that this undisclosed plan will also vary in price depending on your location.

Honestly, this all sounds pretty good, but taking into account the company’s rocky past, it will be interesting to see if movie-goers will be onboard for the changes.
