The city of Lewes has announced a scheduled, system-wide outage between Oct. 15 and Oct. 19, urging residents who require 24-hour medical equipment to take necessary precautions ahead of time.

Anyone staying in Lewes should expect the first electric outage to begin Monday at 11:59 p.m. and end Tuesday at 5 a.m. The second will begin on Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. the next morning.

The outage will occur at the same time Wednesday and Thursday and will end on Friday at 5 a.m.

The overnight outages will allow workers to safely replace a broken switch gear at the connection between Delmarva Power and Light and Lewes Board of Public Works.

The Lewes Board of Public Works recommended battery backups for people with a CPAP machine, like a deep cycle marine grade battery with an inverter. Battery packs can also be used to help power the CPAP machine.

Sensitive electronics should be unplugged during the outage or be used with a surge protector in case of power surges. Smoke detectors and alarm batteries should be checked.
